Book Review: Cinder

My Rating: 7.5/10

Synopsis: Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. . . .

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

What originally begins as an homage to the classic tale of Cinderella soon spirals into something completely unexpected – something more. I’m normally kind of averse to reading any more new fiction based on fictional tales already (or a ‘re-imagining’), so I was a little hesitant to pick this up. However, I did see the word ‘cyborg’ and you know how I feel about those lovely machinated humans. The cover itself looks pretty cool, too, doesn’t it?

The story starts off simply enough, in terms of the classic fairytale: Girl is poor. Girl is cyborg. Girl meets prince. Girl lives with stepsisters, wretched stepmother, and…wait a minute. A robot helper? Yes, a robot assistant (who’s my favorite, by the way). You think you know where this is heading until, before you know it, the entire story spins on its axis and you’re someplace completely different! I like to keep my reviews spoiler free, so I think it’s best to keep mum about what direction took place. However, I will say that once I got past the exposition, I couldn’t put this book down. The surprises and shockingly suspenseful action will keep you glued to the pages deep into the night. It’s fun, it’s quirky, it’s a paranormal romance about cyborgs. What more could you want?

Chock full of action, suspense and touches of romance, Cinder delivers quite the original spin on the classic tale of Cinderella. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the sequels!
